Tenerife

The Canary Islands form an archipeligo located 1120km south of Spain and just 112km west or Morocco and with the Azorzes, Cape Verde and Madeira they form what is known as Macronesia. The Canary Islands comprise seven islands spanning over 400km from La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomerra (the smallest in the group) in the east to Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote in the west. Along with six islets the Canaries cover a total area of 7,447 square metres.

Formed by huge volcanic forces an estimated 30 million years ago, the Canary Islands history is still shrouded in mystery. Even the origin of their collective name is in debate; some say that they are named after the Latin canere - to sing, in reference to the native canaries living on the island, others claim the name is canus - dog, the islands used to be home to large dogs, apparently, or perhaps the Canarii tribe of Morocco gave the islands their name. Who knows?

With a booming tourist trade the Canaries have become popular with foreign property buyers. A four hour flight from the UK, the tax free status of the islands combined with the fantastic climate makes buying a home an attractive proposition.

TENERIFE
Tenerife is the largest of the seven islands and is one of the contrasts: the hot dry south is very different to the lush green north. Visitors to this island are never short of something to do and good roads together with clear signposting makes getting around very easy. The south of the island, which incorporates Playa de las Americas and Los Christianos, has some great beaches and water sports are a popular activity.
